We are so thankful that we had Alison as our nurse, as her attention to detail that day gave us the happy and healthy 18-month-old who is running around our house today.
Alison was my nurse when I delivered my 3rd baby and also the following day when we were discharged. From the moment we checked into the Birth Care Center, she was a great nurse. I raved about her in the first few days of being postpartum as I was retelling our birth story to family and friends. They all got to hear that not only did Alison apply the best counter pressure, but she also helped me flip my OP baby through many rounds of side-lying releases. Little did I know that Alison's part in our story would extend much further than the room we stayed in at the Birth Care Center.

After my son’s newborn screening was drawn, Alison said she was worried about one of the dots and asked if she could redo it. She explained that the tests get sent to the state, and they are quick to reject any cards that are not perfect. She was able to get the blood redrawn and sent off to the state that day. I am so glad Alison noticed the first test was smeared and would likely be rejected because it caught a congenital birth defect that we would otherwise have no idea about until it was too late. Our son was born without a thyroid, and we were told that treatment within the first 7 days of life is critical to avoid brain damage. The state processed our result when he was 6 days and 3 hours old and contacted us immediately. Luckily, we were able to begin his treatment within an hour of the notification.

We had less than a day to spare when it came to the recommended treatment timeframe, so a rejection of the first newborn screening could have been detrimental. We are so thankful that we had Alison as our nurse, as her attention to detail that day gave us the happy and healthy 18-month-old who is running around our house today.
