Allison or Alli as she is known by co-workers is an exceptionally talented and compassionate nurse. She always maintains a very pleasant and upbeat attitude towards the mission of emergency nursing. Often the climate in the department is hectic, the pace is constant, and the environment is filled with the push to perform "the next task needed" this, of course, occupies the total nurse; physically, mentally and spiritually. In the department's most critical patient care area (shock rooms) the nurse can become overwhelmed with the very real possibility of their patient's death on their watch. When a good nurse makes an emotional investment into both the patient and family, it can sorely deplete them. As death looms the weight of the family's grief can weigh so heavily on a nurse that she cannot meet the emotional needs of the family.
Alli exemplifies a poise and side of human compassion that must absolutely be acknowledged. In fact, it should be a requirement in all nursing to have the kind of compassion that meets the patient and family members at their need, wherever that need is. Alli is not only able to maintain her focus and provide excellent patient care; she also looks closely into the family's emotional and spiritual need during this time. In what I believe is an effort to provide well-rounded patient care for both the dying patient and the family left to mourn the death is what comes naturally from the heart of a good nurse. Alli has found a place to serve and care for patients and honors them in a most befitting way.
I watched Alli ask the family, "Would you like a prayer? Would you like to sing a song? What would you like to do to honor your family member now?" The interaction was not at all pushy or rude; it was just sensitive and useful with perfect tone and timing. Alli's genuinely warm hearted concern for the family was deeply felt and impactful and that human touch that stays with us for years to come. This family not only thanked Alli they showed their gratitude by hugging her. The heart of a good nurse is still a precious tangible thing that touches all. Being a good nurse for the right reasons can always be measured in the patient care provided and the concern shown to the families attached.
