Alyssa Handelman is an emergency department nurse who is a recent graduate of the nursing residency program. Although she is still a novice nurse, she has excelled in her care and goes out of her way for patients on a regular basis. Recently, Alyssa received a letter from the daughter of a patient who received exemplary care. The daughter reported that Alyssa was “extremely professional, never made them feel rushed, always was comforting, genuine, positive, caring, provided a personal touch and was upbeat and happy”. It was clear to them that she was “smiling underneath her mask”. The family reported that their mind was put at ease, and they were not worried about leaving their mom under her competent care. She provided the family with education and tips about how to manage at home to help their mom. Alyssa called the family at 0200 to update the family after she went to 3North to check on the patient. She made the ED to inpatient transition a positive one for the patient and the family and managed to remove much of the anxiety for them. In the last two years new nurses have had an exceptionally challenging environment in which to learn. Alyssa has managed to embrace the spirit of nursing and being a caregiver in addition to mastering the technical skill that is required for this very challenging vocation.
