Amanda was the day nurse for me as a patient. I had been brought in early that day for treatment for a small intestinal blockage. I had an NG tube in.
Early that morning, my wife's doctor came in to tell me that she, who was down the hall in ICU, was not expected to make it through the day. She and I had been in a serious automobile accident. Her injuries had left her hospitalized and in a Rehab facility up to that time. She had been brought to Nebraska Medicine later with pneumonia and treatment for infection. She was on full blood pressure medication and 100% oxygen that morning.
I asked to be taken down the hall to her room to be with her. Permission came from the staff due to the situation. I was there all day, as myself and my family said our goodbyes.
After Amanda had wheeled me to my wife's room, she continued to make trips back and forth down the hall to take my vitals and perform the duties she had in the care for me she was responsible for. She never complained but encouraged me to stay with my family until that evening when my wife passed away.
The following morning, I felt I had to leave the hospital to go home and be with my children to help plan the funeral. The doctors, after analyzing of my condition, reluctantly agreed to let me go.
Again Amanda, as my day nurse did everything in her control to expedite the discharge process after receiving the doctor's order.
My family and I felt that Amanda went far above her duties and yet in a professional way, endeavored to make the situation as comfortable for us as possible.
