Amber worked with the patient's family and was able to have the patient's newborn granddaughter come into the ICU.
There was a female ICU patient that Amber was taking care of. I assisted Amber in going down to Radiology for a CT scan. While waiting for the CT to be done, we began talking to the patient about her family and her new granddaughter. She was a very proud Grandmother and was able to show us pictures upon returning to the ICU room. Amber noticed while waiting for the CT that the patient was really struggling with breathing, even while on high-flow oxygen.
Once the patient was back in her room, she began to decompensate each day. The patient had a very difficult time realizing how sick she was with her advanced cancer and lung disease. Amber was able to connect with this patient and have a very deep, meaningful conversation about her prognosis. The patient told Amber that she wanted to see and hold her new granddaughter before going into Hospice Care. Amber worked with the patient's family and was able to have the patient's newborn granddaughter come into the ICU. The patient was able to hold her granddaughter and give her hugs and kisses. A bond was formed immediately.
A bond was also formed between Amber and her patient. The pictures that the family took of the patient and her granddaughter were so beautiful to see. All of this was possible because one Nurse took it upon herself to put into play the last wishes of her dying patient. Amber is a great nurse who sees ways to help her patients. She sees the whole picture and is able to make decisions and work with team members to give the absolute best care for her patients. I am proud to call her my co-worker.
