Amelia came to see M on her day off because she knew that M was going to comfort care, and Amelia may not get to speak to her again!
My friend came into the hospital thinking she had pneumonia, but when the doctor gave us the news that she was dying, Amelia was the nurse on duty. I was there, seeing the sweet spirit she brought into the room. Her soft spoken words were filled with concern that the patient truly understood the news the doctor gave her. Then, when Amelia learned Sunday that M did not want her two daughters notified until after she was cremated, she again was so sincere and compassionate. Her talk with M helped M make the decision to allow the doctor to call the oldest daughter about her condition and prognosis! M agreed to talk with her daughter.
Later that day, she got to FaceTime with both her daughters, and a little later, she did FaceTime with her daughters and grandchildren, and I believe there were a few great-grandchildren. This helped everyone to clear the misunderstanding that each had. All because Amelia's tender words touched M's heart. When M was asking for a particular medication too early, Amelia explained why she needed to wait until the proper time. M was acceptant of Amelia's instruction. Amelia's attitude, compassion, understanding, and desire to see families come together, recognize misunderstandings, and connect again to clear the air! We couldn't have asked for a more loving, caring, compassionate nurse at a time that it was needed!
Because of Amelia's sweetness, I, as M's advocate, friend, and caregiver, saw her respond positively to Amelia. This brought joy to M and her family, corrected misunderstandings, and brought peace to a dying friend.
Above and beyond... Amelia came to see M on her day off because she knew that M was going to comfort care, and Amelia may not get to speak to her again! She is definitely choice! She is an angel without wings!
