She was so calm and so caring but also so knowledgeable that I felt totally safe in her hands.
I was admitted for quite extensive bowel surgery. I ended up having post operative bleeding. I had 15 doctors and nurses in my room who were very reassuring, but it was still a very difficult and worrying experience. Once the transfusions had started, I was transferred back up to the ICU, and Amy was my nurse. She was then with me for the majority of my stay in ICU, which was definitely one of the most difficult periods I have been through. If I could write the perfect description of an ICU nurse in that situation - Amy would be it. She was so calm and so caring but also so knowledgeable that I felt totally safe in her hands. She was so reassuring and responded immediately to anything I asked for. She also knew exactly what I needed to make me feel comfortable, such as washing my teeth, giving me a wash when I couldn't move, or wetting my lips when I was nil by mouth for a long period. I had multiple episodes of bleeding during most of my time in ICU, and times I could not get up to sit on the commode as I felt so unwell. Each time I had an episode she would reassure me and immediately clean me so I felt better about myself. All of these seemingly small things made such a huge difference in how comfortable I felt and how well I got through that time, and she just seemed to know what I needed without me asking. My partner was also away so it made an even bigger difference having her there. I am so so grateful that I had Amy as my nurse for that difficult time, and I am 100% sure she makes a similar difference to all her patients. She is exceptionally good at her job but also has the perfect manner and attitude, which combine to make sure she is exceptional.
