When I think about a nurse whom I would want caring for my family, Amy comes to the top of any list. She consistently comes to work with an upbeat, "can do" attitude, and no matter how busy or unpleasant things get, she always steps up and delivers excellent care. I remember several months ago a woman with severe mental illness came to the Emergency Department. She had been homebound for months due to her social anxiety and was unbathed in dirty clothing. She was infested with mites and lice - hair, body, and clothing. While it is an expectation that any of us would care for this patient, Amy stepped up and took the case. Amy spent several hours coaxing this patient into accepting a little care, then a little more, then more. She took the time to persuade the patient to receive care versus just doing it herself with restraints and force. Little by little she got the infested clothing off, helped the patient bathe, decontaminated her, and made her comfortable. Throughout the process, Amy helped ensure this patient's dignity was preserved and kept a therapeutic relationship with her. When all this was done, the patient was clean and in clean clothing and accepting of treatment. She went on to get the help she needed. Amy, on the other hand, showered and changed and came right back to work as she would with any other patient care episode. Amy is truly remarkable in her compassion and dedicated spirit and represents all that is right in nursing.
