I had the privilege of having Angie as my nurse during the majority of a recent stay at Barnes-Jewish Hospital. Angie laughed with me, supported me, and constantly checked in on me. I came into the hospital through the Emergency Department. While in the Emergency Department I constantly heard patients make requests for "turkeysandwiches." As soon as these patients were brought back to a bed, they were requesting these sandwiches. I asked Angie, "What's the story behind these turkey sandwiches?" She fully explained the "why's" and then described the very simple sandwich to me.
Before continuing, I need to explain that each day I was at Barnes, I requested to go home. I was in for something relatively minor. I felt and looked great, and I didn't fit the picture of a "normal" patient. In fun, each time a nurse came into my room and asked if I needed anything my response would be "to go home." They would giggle and move on.
So one day, Angie came in as normal to check on me, we had a laugh or two and chatted for a few minutes. As she was leaving she asked me if there was anything she could get me and I quickly yelled out, "How about a turkey sandwich!" We both laughed very hard and I continued to hear her giggle as she walked down the hallway. I settled back in bed watching TV when all of a sudden through the closed curtain I felt something hit me. When I looked down I found that a turkey sandwich had been tossed at me. I don't think I have ever laughed as hard as I did at that moment. It was absolutely what I needed to endure my stay in the hospital.
They key here is that Angie picked up easily on my personality. She knew I needed to laugh and made a painful experience something I will remember and laugh at for a lifetime. She 100% gave me what I needed to ensure I was comfortable and happy during my stay.
