She doesn’t just show up; she shows out, creating a positive experience for those around her. She influences positive patient outcomes through her advocacy and innovation.
My nominee is a Unit-Based NPD who has created system-wide improvements. My nominee joined the team as the float team NPD. She quickly recognized that the orientation process lacked structure, and she immediately began reaching out to other members of the team to seek input, guidance, and support.
My nominee frequently takes on additional responsibilities, and I know that I will miss several of her projects. What I appreciate most is that when my nominee sees an issue, instead of just reporting the issue, she works to solve the issue. My nominee has developed a system-wide PDSA manual so that any nurse in the organization can lead QI projects on their units.
She frequently mentors others (across the system) who are working on QI projects. She is chair for Coordinating Council and has spent the last several months building a SharePoint site for shared leadership. This site will make the SLC’s work more transparent and streamlined. My nominee is one of our team’s quiet cheerleaders. She is often supporting people behind the scenes and checking in, rarely receiving recognition during our morning huddles. She demonstrates advocacy and Kristen Swanson’s Theory of Caring in her daily interactions with everyone she encounters. She is a master of Being with, as evidenced by a personal interaction we’ve shared.
Without going into too much detail, I was experiencing a really hard day and happened to be on campus when it happened. I went into my old office at TG, and found my nominee there, working hard on something. She definitely picked up on my general ickiness and somehow managed to lift me up without having to ask. We spent some time talking through things and exploring solutions, which I was unable to do at the time.
She is also a master of advocation, positivity, and following the rules (aka policy). I have witnessed her advocation in seeking resources and pathways for the float pool, seen her passion in the PSCA playbook, and witness firsthand her advocacy for nursing at Coordinating Council. She is a true systems thinker, and when she thinks of solutions, she thinks beyond the walls of her home unit. She includes others in her work, thereby contributing to their professional development. My nominee is the living embodiment of innovation.
I mentioned her work on a SharePoint site, but I know she has developed multiple sites for teams. She is one of the leaders for our innovative Echoes for nursing storytelling events. Storytelling is an area of passion for her, and she has quietly worked to make these events come to life. She serves as a storytelling coach for many of the presentations. She has improved the onboarding process for new float pool nurses by creating partnerships and unique unit experiences.
I believe the examples above speak to how she supports others. She often provides comfort to others. I consider her a role model as I move into a Coordinating Council role, and the examples above demonstrate her commitment to collaboration, resiliency, and reducing burnout.
She is a hard worker and somehow, she manages to perform at that level all year long. I am not privy to any positive feedback form leaders or her teammates, but I suspect she often is applauded by her teammates and leaders. She doesn’t just show up; she shows out, creating a positive experience for those around her. She influences positive patient outcomes through her advocacy and innovation. My nominee work at MultiCare has a huge ripple effect, improving nursing, patient care, and outcomes. I am proud to have the opportunity to serve next to her.
