I was caring for a homeless patient who came in as an ACS and was being discharged on a Sunday. I called his daughter to see if she would be able to pick up his medication for Plavix prior to picking him up. She stated that she did not have gas money to come and there was no other family or friends that could pick up his medications and give the patient a ride home. I came to Anna to ask for ideas on how I could discharge this patient with his medications in hand on a Sunday. He not only didn't have the money but didn't have anyone to pick them up. As a nurse, I could not discharge him home without ensuring he had his Plavix. She offered to not only pick up my patient's medication but to pay for it as well. She drove to the pharmacy, in the rain, and got there 20 minutes before the pharmacy closed. Because of Anna, my patient had the medication he needed. It is nurses like her who inspire me and make our unit great.
