I have to admit, when I first saw Antonio I was nervous. I have not ever had a male nurse and I was worried it was going to be terrible. He came in and introduced himself and addressed my IV right away. I had been worried about my IV having some blood in it, but I hadn't mentioned it to any of my nurses. I was so thankful that he thought to address something that had been bothering me as part of his normal practice. It only got better from there. Through his frequent rounds, I started to get to know about him and his family. He shared that he was originally going to be an engineer, but that he realized he wanted to be a nurse like his aunt. He told me how he would go to work with her when he was younger. He would help change beds and get patients water and things they needed. He was trained and called from a young age to do this. He made it his purpose to make sure that I knew about every change that was occurring in my care and was meticulous in updating the board in the room because he knew how it important it was to me. I was so embarrassed to discuss bowel movements but wanted to make sure this was not an issue since I am planning to have surgery soon. He made me comfortable discussing something so personal and gave me several options to resolve this issue. After he brought me prune juice he continued to check on me saying, "Is the concern you expressed earlier resolved?" This is a testament to him as a nurse. He recognized how embarrassing it was for me to bring this up and so he was checking on me and being respectful of this. He has such great potential and is so kind. He was called to do this and I feel like God put him in my path to help during this critical time in my life. I wanted to recognize him for the great impact he has had on my stay here. He is truly the best!
