When most people think of a nurse, they think of someone who takes care of them when they are admitted and must stay in the hospital. The nurses in my department, don't do that particular job, but they still take care of every patient who walks through our doors. I wanted to recognize one nurse in particular and her name is Ariel Grassi. She typically works with our lymphedema patients and does an outstanding job. She not only assists the patients when in clinic but takes care of all of their phone calls and messages efficiently. Ariel also assists the doctor with whatever he needs in regard to his patients, research letters, etc. Ariel has an abundance of knowledge regarding lymphedema, breast health, our department processes, and the use of our computer systems. But this is not where it stops.
My department had 2 nurses leave at the end of October, thus remaining nurses were doing double and triple duties. Since this time, Ariel has gone above and beyond. She has covered clinics that were not hers and this included traveling to other sites when needed. The important area where Ariel has shone is training the new nurses. She works with me to come up with a training plan and gives feedback regarding where each nurse is in their progress and where they still need work. We also had another nurse get sick and Ariel was the first one to step up and ask what the plan was and offered to cover both upcoming clinics. Ariel also helped at the front desk taking phone calls and scheduling patients. Everything Ariel has done in the last few months was to assist the doctors, her coworkers, and most importantly the patients. All her hard work has made the time, up until we hired the new nurses, less stressful for all involved. Ariel has done it all with calmness and professionalism. We are very lucky to have her as a part of our team and so are the patients who had no idea we were understaffed.
Ariel carries out the UPMC core values every day and is a team player the others should emulate. I hope Ariel realizes this nomination is a way of saying THANK YOU! She is a true DAISY Nurse.
