I felt comforted in knowing the patient had someone there with them. Art went above and beyond caring for a patient in a true time of need.
I was the charge nurse overnight; I had already had a busy shift and had mistakenly not given Art his patient back the second night. The patient seemed to be declining this shift after 2300. I helped the bedside nurse as the patient was needing increased O2 and having decreased blood pressure. We had notified the family to come in as the patient was declining and we decided not to advance cares or transfer to higher level of care. The wife said she would be at least 45 minutes. On the tele monitor we could see a notable decline in heart rate and O2 sats. I jumped in to answer a call light, and when I came out, Art let me know the patient had passed. Art let me know that he had gone in to be with the patient when he passed and that the patient was not alone. Although the patient was minimally responsive and working towards comfort cares I am so thankful the patient did not pass alone. It wasn’t expected this soon. I felt comforted in knowing the patient had someone there with them. Art went above and beyond caring for a patient in a true time of need. When the wife came in, she was relieved to know someone was there with her husband. She thanked me and extended a thank you to the whole floor staff for caring for her husband. She had noted how challenging it had been recently as he felt so poor and had a bad attitude and had been grumpy. No one should have to die alone, we have such a large group when we are born, we should have just as much support at the end. It must feel scary to be alone. Thank you, Art.
