With great appreciation she explained the critical significance of catching this issue when she did. By acting, Ashlea allowed this mom to avoid harmful effects to the child, and potentially saved the pregnancy.
She does everything she can to improve the lives of our patients, and after reading the words below, you will gain a glimpse of a professional woman who loves nursing, our patients, and serving her country.
Our clinic is a challenging place to work. The recent provider shortage has resulted in an increase in patient load, but Ashlea always performs with the highest quality and a smile. She’s an extraordinary nurse, role-model, and mentor who keeps her office door open to create a warm and caring environment. She exemplifies our team environment with commendation.
Recently, a patient contacted our clinic for her pregnancy confirmation test, and initial OB appointment. During the virtual interaction, the patient mentioned taking medication for hyperthyroidism, but could not remember the name. Upon reviewing the patient's record, Ashlea found nothing about a thyroid medication or diagnosis, so she asked the patient to come into the clinic. Once the patient arrived, she clarified what medication she was taking. The patient also stated the reason for no documentation was because she travels to her provider in the Philippines for her care. Ashlea recognized the teratogenic risks associated with this medication, especially during the first trimester. Knowing the situation was urgent, she consulted with our provider, who agreed to see the patient right away.
Following the appointment, the patient was distraught and deeply concerned about her unborn child. Ashlea provided emotional support and provided resources to help ease the patient’s thoughts before driving home. The provider later came to Ashlea and mentioned she had just ended a phone call with OBGYN. With great appreciation she explained the critical significance of catching this issue when she did. By acting, Ashlea allowed this mom to avoid harmful effects to the child, and potentially saved the pregnancy.
Ms. Blevins uses critical thought and stands up for what she believes is right. Florence Nightingale would be proud of the legacy our nurses are leaving, and Ashlea is no exception with empathy, persistence, and patient advocacy. Her contributions make her a true asset to NMRTC, and candidate to receive the honored DAISY Award. Ms. Blevins is a DAISY Nurse.
