Ashley took care of a patient recently in the ICU that was extremely ill. What impressed me is how Ashley used her knowledge, experience, and intuition as an ICU nurse that day. It is easy to become task saturated when caring for a critically ill patient. Ashley never lost sight of how sick the patient was, verbalizing her concerns to the physicians and family.

Ashley did an amazing job presenting the family with the information they needed to know about their family member’s medical condition. Ashley gave them details so the family could make an informed decision regarding his care. The family decided to change the code status as the patient’s condition would not be survivable long term. Prior to withdrawing life support, the patient died.

While these conversations are never easy for anyone, it is the right thing to do. Patients and families have the right to know what is going on. Ashley helped the family cope and come to the realization of what was happening. Ashley lives out the core values of what ProMedica is all about. Excellence along with compassionate care was absolutely delivered for the patient and family in a time of need.

I would have no worries if Ashley was caring for my family member. Ashley is a prime example of what a great ICU nurse is, and she is also an amazing person doing extraordinary things. This is not the first time I have seen her provide outstanding care. This is just one of the many examples that I have been a witness to here at Bay Park.
