Ashley stopped to render care to a patient in the hallway of the ER on a busy night. She had an entire patient assignment of her own and also had just finished caring for a trauma patient, when she walked by the patient in the hallway who stopped her stating he was "having trouble". When Ashley leaned down to better understand the patient, she noted angioedema and audible wheezing. She quickly assessed the patient and promptly intervened to provide care to this patient. She was able to determine that he had just returned from CT, where he received iv dye and that he was having an anaphylactic reaction. He was hypotensive and his o2 sat was in the high 80% range. After notifying the patient's ER provider, she promptly obtained and administered the orders for SQ epi; IV Pepcid, Benadryl, Solumedrol; and notified respiratory therapy for a continuous nebulizer.
Due to her prompt recognition and action, Ashley rendered care to a patient who could have ended up in full anaphylactic shock with a poor outcome. Instead, this patient was monitored following medication administration and later discharged from the emergency department. I would like to recognize Ashley for her team approach and for the difference she made in the life of this patient. Way to go Ashley! We are proud to have you as a member of our ER family!
