Her tone and compassion immediately put her patients at ease during treatments; she never dismissed their concerns but took the time to listen and provide care.
During my clinical rotation in the hemodialysis unit, I had the privilege of working alongside Nurse Aubrey. She exhibited great compassion and professionalism. Little does she know that her work ethic and teaching have forever changed my views on patient care. I have been an LVN with six years of experience on a MedSurg unit; however, I have not had much hands-on experience or knowledge about hemodialysis, having only training and education in theory. Nurse Aubrey took me under her wing without hesitation, educating me and providing valuable hands-on experience. Throughout our day together, I observed the exceptional care she provided to her patients while also offering great support to her colleagues. Her tone and compassion immediately put her patients at ease during treatments; she never dismissed their concerns but took the time to listen and provide care. Nurse Aubrey took a moment to reflect and explain to me that it is crucial to see the patient as a whole, understanding their fears, pain, and even victories. She taught me that while dialysis is essential, it is equally important for the patient to feel heard and cared for beyond the machine, as that is what truly makes a difference. I left that day with a renewed sense of purpose in my job as a nurse and nursing student. She not only taught me the technical skills needed to perform dialysis correctly but also demonstrated holistic, compassionate care. Her ability to balance professionalism with genuine empathy made all the difference- a lesson I will carry with me throughout my nursing career. I will always be grateful.
