Ayanna inspired him and made him feel strong when he was at his weakest.
Our son was sent via helicopter to AdventHealth for Children's Hospital. Our sweet six-year-old was lethargic, scared, and in serious pain. His arrival preceded our arrival by half an hour because we were not permitted to fly with him. We were scared and panicked as we raced to his room. We opened the door to his room to find our son smiling and happy. Ayanna, his nurse, was by his side making sure he was as comfortable as possible. Her confidence eased our fears and her kindness in the early morning and will never be forgotten.
Aside from providing the best care possible, she danced down the hall to encourage our son to keep moving post-surgery. She took the time to listen and ask him questions. The memories he will carry forward from this experience will not be of fear, but strength. Ayanna inspired him and made him feel strong when he was at his weakest. Please consider her for this award as she is an extraordinary nurse and a wonderful human being.

My son was admitted into the PICU and PEDS this weekend. His sickle cell blood disorder has placed him in your hospital’s care multiple times within the past year and can I just say of all the times we’ve been in your care I have never had a better experience in PEDS than that night with Nurse Ayanna. She has phenomenal bedside manner; she was very knowledgeable of my son's condition and handled his stranger anxiety so well. Not to mention, she was very receptive to my feedback and concerns.
Specifically, my son has bad luck with IV-lines, and – as often as I express my concerns about his discomfort – the nurses usually just gloss it over and retort “it’s flushing fine, he just may not like the saline”. Well, Ayanna did the exact opposite. She examined his site before trying to flush, she was attentive to his discomfort (and mine) and she decided “nope, I don’t like how it looks and I don’t like how he’s reacting. We don’t need this IV, we’ll get his labs another way”. This was so comforting to hear and witness as a parent – I come in and out of the hospital watching those videos about parents being apart from our child’s care team but it’s very rare that we feel included. I want to thank her for her care, and I’d like her to know she did a whole lot more for my personal confidence than anyone has done in my son's entire time of being under Advent Health’s care. Truly.
