She listens to what the staff needs, whether it’s a new nurse who is struggling with skills or mental health, or an experienced and more senior nurse who is struggling with a new concept, she meets everyone where they are and develops individual plans.
It is my absolute pleasure to nominate Barb for a DAISY Nurse Educator award. The criterion for the award includes:
• Has empathy and compassion, which fosters deep connections and creates a safe and supportive environment.
• Possesses effective communication skills including active listening, and the ability to articulate ideas and present information in a clear and concise manner.
• Serves as a role model and mentor for nursing by leading by example and nurturing leadership qualities that will assist in continued professional development.
• Is adaptable and flexible, embracing change and able to modify teaching methods to meet a diverse range of needs.
• Models a love of learning and is committed to lifelong learning and professional development.
• Establishes clear learning outcomes and provides constructive feedback.
• Builds collaborative working relationships.
Barb has a great relationship with staff of all levels, the unit management, and her Education colleagues. She supports the staff in providing competency assessment (sometimes on a 1:1 basis), ongoing education, and provision of continuing education credits. She is a great listener and receives positive feedback from the Unit Director and staff on a regular basis. She listens to what the staff needs, whether it’s a new nurse who is struggling with skills or mental health, or an experienced and more senior nurse who is struggling with a new concept, she meets everyone where they are and develops individual plans. She encourages and supports the staff members’ professional development in participating in interprofessional projects. She has assisted them to attend national nursing conferences and to present their work by poster or podium presentations.
The Unit Director shared, “I have never worked with a nurse, educator, or human who is as dedicated as she is.” Barb is also a role model for new educators. She has oriented and mentored new med-surg educators. She communicates with them frequently and provides practical and supportive advice. She often talks to them and provides advice about work-life balance. Barb deserves the DAISY Nurse Educator Award.
