My husband T had surgery and was on NVU and Barry was his nurse the first day. It will stand out as T's roughest postoperative day, but with an outstanding RN. Barry bonded with both T and me right away - his humor and joking helped T cope with the ups and downs of the day. He still managed to teach in terms a non-medical person would understand. When low B/Ps became a problem, Barry notified the doctor right away, stat labs were done, and Barry was in the room explaining the intervention. Barry also struck a great balance with me, T's wife, both as a worried family member and as a retired Bronson RN. He addressed questions to the patient, but also acknowledged my input. When T chose to defer to my "retired nursing" judgment, Barry respected that. It truly felt like we were a team of 3 problem-solving. I also liked that when he was doing some clinical problem solving (blood sugar was high), he went through his thoughts out loud with us. I respected his nursing judgment. The following day when T was finally stable and able to stand and walk in the hall with PT, I knew Barry was special to him when he said, "I wish Barry was here to see this!"
