Becky got the patient set up in a hotel room for the night and then stocked her up on snacks to feed her and get her through until she could get a cab the next day to take her home.
At the end of 2020, a winter storm hit Iowa hard. Within hours inches piled on. A patient from Internal Medicine was waiting for her cab back to Iowa City, starting at 2 pm. When the clinic was closing down around 6 pm, Nurse Becky and the security guard for IRL had noticed the patient had never been picked up. Dangerous road conditions had led to the cab not being able to come to pick this patient up to take her home. The patient had no money, and nowhere to go. With Uber being unable to pick her up, Nurse Becky and the IRL security guard got the patient a room at the Homewood Suites, next door to IRL. They were willing to pay for her stay out of their own pockets. The patient had no money for food, but Nurse Becky knew a doctor she worked with had snacks in her office. Becky got the patient set up in a hotel room for the night and then stocked her up on snacks to feed her and get her through until she could get a cab the next day to take her home.
While Becky could have easily left and tried to get home safe herself, she put this patient above her own want and made sure they were okay before making the dangerous drive home in the middle of the massive snowstorm.
