I was recently diagnosed with diabetes and within a few days of starting the medication, I was brought into the ER with ketoacidosis. I was scared and felt overwhelmed. Even with the education it still felt like it was coming at me all at once. Then my nurse introduced me to Ben. Ben was a nurse in the unit but didn't directly take care of me. But when he heard that I was diagnosed with diabetes he came to talk to me about it on a more down to earth level, using his own experiences living with type one diabetes.
Ben was able to give me a better idea of what it was like living with diabetes and how I'll be able to manage it and live with it. I learned much from Ben in the short hours we spoke, but it helped to ease my mind and to help me understand what the instructions were. I appreciate what he did for me.
