The next morning, when we saw Beth, she presented my granddaughter L with her own baby blanket that was given to her by her mother on the day she was born. L was so impressed that she would give something so precious to her after meeting her once.
In all my life I have never met a nurse as caring and compassionate as Beth. My daughter came into the NICU early morning with a severe head trauma, a bullet wound. Her daughter, my 18 yr. old granddaughter came next, and my wife and I arrived a little later. Beth was very careful in her words not to build false hope or paint too negative a picture of my child’s situation, but my wife and I knew that she did not survive. My 27 yr. old grandson came next. Both children were absolutely devastated. My grandson, more so than my granddaughter, he was driving the car, witnessed the shooting, and did what he could to stop the blood. He arrived with his mother’s blood still on him; and I think he blamed himself. Beth was very gentle and patient with both of them and tried as hard to comfort them and she did it for my daughter for both of the two days that they were there. And in every aspect of my daughter’s care, Beth would explain what was happening and what we could expect. I felt it was my job to comfort both children, Beth made that job so much easier. The next morning, when we saw Beth, she presented my granddaughter L with her own baby blanket that was given to her by her mother on the day she was born. L was so impressed that she would give something so precious to her after meeting her once. I agreed, I took the blanket from L and took it to Beth and told her you have to sign this on the back. Then she said she was named after her OB nurse. One nurse changed the life of one girl on the happiest day of her mother’s life, and she changed the life of my granddaughter on the saddest day of her life, the day she had to say goodbye to her mother.
