Beth demonstrated enthusiasm for teaching, learning, and nursing that inspires and motivates students.
I would like to nominate Beth Doyle, faculty at OHSU School of Nursing for their long-time commitment to teaching nursing care for older adults by volunteering their time and skills in N210 health promotion class.

Beth has been instrumental in delivering 2-hour “G” semi-simulation activities three terms every year for 2018-2022 to first-year nursing students. "G" is an older adult case study patient for N210 health promotion class. What they did as volunteer activity was to make "G" come alive. They delivered “G” semi-simulation activity as an in-person class activity. They also adopted the case study to an online version during COVID online teaching. Beth acted out "G". With excellent acting skills (former theater major), she provided intentional responses to guide students to think and learn about key concepts in older adult health promotion.

This semi-simulation experience in the classroom experience presents an excellent opportunity to practice patient-centered communication skills, specifically motivational interviewing which is now taught a week before the "G" activity. Through this activity, students realize how clinical priorities shift, how grief impacts ADLs, impact of family relationships in health maintenance, patient’s perception about access to health, fall prevention, blood pressure management, and how to apply motivational interviewing skills in patient care.

Beth brings in so many rich qualities of an older adult with real-life issues and humor to the discussion which makes this learning experience more engaging for students. Beth demonstrated enthusiasm for teaching, learning, and nursing that inspires and motivates students. She was instrumental in making older adult content “real,” interesting, and leveled to first-term students.
