He treated my father as a whole person and not as a specific diagnosis.
I would like to thank my father’s nurse BJ from the Intensive Care Unit. After 4 weeks of hospitalization, moving from one type of care unit in the hospital to another, dad was transferred to the ICU. For three day shifts, he was blessed to have BJ as his nurse. To say there was one specific situation that I’m choosing to nominate him would be an understatement. He treated my father as a whole person and not as a specific diagnosis. From the first day, he looked at the entire picture. Yes, he took great care in administering meds, adjusting machines and wires that were hooked up to dad, and making sure alarms were answered and treatments were done. But he saw beyond all of that and engaged him in his care. He listened to dad, he looked into the why is this happening, he pushed for questions to be answered and made dad and us feel that we were listened to. He went out of his way to make my father more comfortable, more at ease, and more cared for each day he was assigned to him. I’m sure it’s not easy to have to run on 110% for 10 to 12 hours, ensuring that your patient’s needs are met, let alone do it with a smile on your face. BJ did all of that and went that extra mile for dad.
