laine was able to relay to me that the patient had been dealing with some significant depression and anxiety at home and had requested to meet with the hospital chaplain as well as a possible psych consultation in the morning.
I was the nurse for a Spanish-speaking patient who had been admitted due to problems relating to alcohol use. I do not speak Spanish, and although I had the iPad for translation, I felt like things were getting lost. The patient started getting really anxious to the level of a panic attack, and I had nothing ordered for anxiety. I felt like I was not being an effective caregiver at that moment as it is difficult to calm down someone when you have a language barrier. I called Blaine and asked him if he had a moment to sit with my patient and help calm him down since he spoke Spanish while I called the doctor.
Blaine willingly sat with my patient and talked him through what he was feeling. Blaine was able to relay to me that the patient had been dealing with some significant depression and anxiety at home and had requested to meet with the hospital chaplain as well as a possible psych consultation in the morning. If it were not for Blaine, I feel like I would not have been able to pick up on this aspect of care and give my patient the care he deserves. Blaine showed a great deal of compassion to this individual, and by calming him down and taking time out of his shift to sit with a patient who wasn't his, he demonstrated the Intermountain values of empathy, respect, and teamwork.
Blaine significantly helped calm this patient down and listened to him even though it wasn't his patient. It is not the only time I have seen him do this. He is always willing to sit down with a patient and get on their level to talk them through their worst days and comfort them. He is great at explaining things in a way that patients understand and are more comfortable with the care and procedures that we are doing. By doing this, he not only benefits the patients we take care of but also encourages other nurses to do the same by setting a positive example and uplifting our work environment.
