Although there are many stories about Bo’s compassion and caring, this one exemplifies the work that Bo does every day. A post-partum patient (Ms. X) began to experience symptoms of depression which quickly developed into post-partum psychosis. Although the time after giving birth for most mothers is a joyful and happy one, Ms. X began her journey into fear, darkness and uncertainty. Ms. X was agitated and hallucinating demanding to go home. Other associates were not comfortable with this situation, but Bo stepped up and worked with Ms. X to minimize the outbursts and shouting. Suddenly, Ms. X attempted to get on the elevator to leave and became forceful, requiring a Code Gray to be called. This for mother/baby is very unusual. Ms. X was surrounded by Public Safety officers and Bo Worked with Ms. X throughout the situation, which lasted many hours.
Bo stayed with Ms.X speaking to her in a gentle and caring voice to help redirect Ms. X. Initially, the patient refused to stay and refused to follow any suggestions. Bo sat with her and reassured Ms. X using a therapeutic approach and a gentle tone of voice. Bo was able to defuse a volatile situation with her professional demeanor. This patient interaction is not a usual occurrence on the Mother/Baby unit, which makes this interaction even more significant. Bo’s response demonstrates what makes a nurse a DAISY nurse, and Bo is a DAISY nurse!
