Brandon developed opportunities for nurses to connect with and serve the community, exemplifying Atrium’s mission “for all”.
Brandon is an exceptional nursing leader who impacts compassionate care by demonstrating Atrium Health’s mission, vision, and values. As the chair of the Adult Management Council, Brandon took on the responsibility of planning Nurses Month for more than 8,000 nurses in the Central Division. Brandon understands and recognizes the value of the contributions to high-quality care from nurses, particularly during a pandemic. He was committed to honoring and recognizing all nurses for their tremendous efforts.
Utilizing the “Nurses Make a Difference” theme provided by the American Nurses Association, he focused on a theme each week for the month. Brandon knew this month-long celebration could not be planned alone, so he utilized his leadership skills and collaborated with others to ensure the events were meaningful. With exceptional teamwork from nurse leaders, bedside nurses, LiveWELL, spiritual care, and countless others, Nurses Month in Central Division had a variety of events that celebrated all nurses. Self-care opportunities provided with the leadership of Brandon included virtual healing touch, a blessing of the hands, yoga, qigong exercise class, and dancing. Many nurses virtually attended Schwartz Center Rounds where teammates shared how their resiliency helped them survive and thrive during the pandemic.
Brandon presented many awards recognizing the caring, commitment, integrity, and teamwork of nurses throughout the Central Division. Professional development opportunities were provided to inspire and motivate nurses to grow and achieve better patient outcomes.
Finally, Brandon developed opportunities for nurses to connect with and serve the community, exemplifying Atrium’s mission “for all”. Nurses collected food items for teammates with food insecurity, wrote cards for troops, and donated needed items to the Hospitality House. Brandon’s dedication to making Nurses Month engaging, motivating, and meaningful to all nurses was evident. Along with his nurse manager duties, Brandon came in early and left late to ensure all activities were a success. Brandon exemplifies outstanding leadership.
In the Adult Management Council, Brandon facilitates the alignment of goals, coordinates activities with the Nurse Manager Operations group, and challenges others to be more engaged. Under Brandon’s leadership, the council has organized several roving carts to promote continued education and connect nurses with professional practice opportunities. He has helped organize several subgroups to promote and recognize Central Division nurses through DAISY and B.E.E. Awards. Brandon leads by example through his actions of sacrifice and dedication to helping the Central Division develop to its full potential. Brandon presses forward every day with a positive, determined spirit that is contagious to all. Brandon models empathy and demonstrates caring for his colleagues time and time again. His genuine concern for and investment in his teammates is evident through his actions.
When a team member’s husband began struggling with health issues, Brandon immediately took up a collection to support medical needs. After the teammate’s family member passed, he took up another collection to assist with funeral expenses. Brandon cares for his community by regularly contributing items such as non-perishable food, toiletries, clothes, and blankets to the community pantry and encourages his teammates to do the same. Brandon also regularly participates in Atrium Health-sponsored organized runs to raise funds for various causes in his community. Brandon understands that skilled and informed nurses lead to better patient outcomes and is constantly motivating his staff to obtain a certification. He ensures they have the resources they need to be successful in doing so and led by example by obtaining his Nurse Executive Certification even though it was not a requirement for his position.
Brandon was essential in the development and facilitation of monthly “Because We Care” Roving Carts to offer encouragement to frontline staff during COVID-19. Brandon takes every opportunity to celebrate and encourage his teammates and regularly recognizes an Employee of the Month. He engaged his teammates in improving mobility by helping to implement “Mobilopoly,” an interactive game that offers incentives for participation and prizes for those with the highest numbers of documented mobility. Under Brandon’s leadership, documentation of incidences of patient mobility has shown a consistent upward trendline from 18% to an average of 80% in just 5 months. To promote an inclusive environment, Brandon participated as a panelist in a Schwartz Center Rounds, Experiencing Social Stigma Around Contracting COVID-19. He shared his personal experience with the illness and continues to advocate to ensure teammates are educated about COVID-19 and vaccinations.
Brandon is passionate about equity for all and highly promotes Atrium Health's vision and values. Brandon establishes good rapport and connection with patients through consistent leader rounding and addresses their concerns in real-time. He connects with his colleagues outside of work by recruiting them to join him in Spartan runs. Brandon is a present and reliable leader. To provide coverage for his AVP, he willingly stepped in to lead weekly MWI calls as well as Obeya presentations for MSKI. When we think about meeting the mission of Atrium Health, Brandon certainly comes to mind. His leadership drives every teammate to improve health, elevate hope, and advance healing for all every day. Thank you for the opportunity to recognize Brandon for all he does for patients, families, and our teammates.
