Because of liver and kidney failure, I have attended the POPS unit weekly to have fluid drawn off my abdomen for the past five years. The regimen required me to have weekly blood tests and an IV with each visit to the POPS unit. During this extended time, I have gotten to know personally many of the nurses, and attendants. My wife and I have watched and rejoiced with each new addition to their families. In many ways, their children became our children. Their transfers and successes became important to us. Once in a while, they would return and say hello and renew our bond and friendship.
One such person is Brandon Hill; an RN who was there with us in the beginning. Ultimately, Brandon was transferred to another unit, but still each Thursday morning, Brandon would appear at my room door and offer to do my IV, which I gladly accepted because Brandon had the "Golden Touch." He could always find the vein the first time with less pain and discomfort to me. Plus, it gave us time to catch up on UofO Football, Family, Travel, and just meaningless chit chat. Brandon's demeanor made my visit much more secure. He would explain to me in layman's language what was going on since he too was experiencing liver issues also.
