The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) implemented a new process for breast milk management to improve the safety of the NICU population. The team consisted of clinical nurses, patient care technicians, nutrition team members, continuous improvement, and nursing leadership. The NICU team demonstrated a true interdisciplinary approach to implement best practice within their unit. The dedication of this team was instrumental in the success of the transition of multiple reliable methods into best practice. This endeavor was nurse-lead and implemented. The team increased their hours, educated their staff, and added extra critical responsibility to enable the successful rollout of the new process. The nursing leadership was also a big part of this process, recognizing the need for the investment to implement best evidence into practice. The development included many PDCA sessions with quick changes to improve their processes. The new breast milk management system has decreased adverse events related to breast milk administration and improved quality and safety of nursing care for neonatal patients.
