My 2-year old son was scheduled for surgery. The morning of surgery as a family we were all quite scared and overwhelmed with the simple idea of our 2-year-old having a big surgery. From the second we walked into HFM our fears and anxieties improved.
The volunteer who walked us to the Surgical Center was very sweet, but our amazing experience really began when we entered his pre-op room. We were greeted by very friendly happy faces, even though it was 6 am, and the cutest tie blanket on his bed, my son loved it and it was a very kind gesture that we did not expect but greatly appreciated.
Our experience only improved once we met the surgical staff, our nurse in pre-op was Brenda. Brenda was aware that not only am I a nurse, but also a nurse at HFM and she did not treat me as either. Brenda treated me like any other patient or family member, for this, I am grateful because that morning I wasn't a nurse, I was a mom, a very scared mom at that.
Brenda was amazing at explaining the plan for pre-op, surgery, and recovery, again her explanation was simple and very easy to understand. She was also great with my son, she joked and laughed and gave him time to warm up to being there making the assessment and vital signs easier.
I can honestly say she eased our fears and anxieties making a scary day one that we look back on as a pleasant one.
Brenda is someone I am proud to call a coworker and proud to have be the face of HFM. She knows her stuff and is an amazing nurse. I cannot thank the staff in the Surgical Center enough for the care we received, but mostly Brenda because I believe she went above and beyond in making us feel comfortable.
