Providing the family with these few moments together to say their goodbyes gave them the chance to cry together, as well as come together during this difficult time.
Brendan Dillon was the nurse of 2 patients, a husband and a wife. The husband was at the end of life, and his wife had a respiratory virus. As the husband's time frame was unclear, Brendan made sure his wife would get the chance to say goodbye. He did not think twice, and he went the extra step to make sure she could see him before he went up to his room from the ER. Brendan showed advocacy for both of these patients, which is a critical skill in nursing. As I wheeled the wife into her husband's room, it was a heartfelt moment for their family. They expressed their sincere thanks and said they could not explain how much this kind gesture meant to them. Providing the family with these few moments together to say their goodbyes gave them the chance to cry together, as well as come together during this difficult time. I even said to Brendan at one point, “What if he passes away before she can get up to his room and see him?” Brendan said, “She will be able to see him. I will wheel her up there myself.” This was inspiring. Being able to experience situations like this, where the nurse advocates and goes that extra step for the patient, makes me even more excited to be a nurse. As a future nurse, I am extremely excited to learn from Brendan and work alongside him. Thank you.
