This nurse refused to give the patient a potentially unsafe amount of pain medication based on keen assessment skills/observing the patient's lack of response to stimuli.
This nurse had a difficult case with a patient who had a complex medical history. A physician tried to overstep and insert themself into the patients care w/o information the hospitalist (whom the patient was actually under). This doctor tried his best to intimidate the nurse by saying the patient's words were different than what was told to the doctor and that the pain scores were worse than what was discussed. The doctor attempted to place unsafe pain medication parameters into effect, and not only was it unnecessary, but it was also dangerous. This nurse refused to give the patient a potentially unsafe amount of pain medication based on keen assessment skills/observing the patient's lack of response to stimuli. This nurse remained professional and kind throughout the entire ordeal and exemplified the kind of professionalism that is a kind DAISY Nurse. As the charge nurse, I was very impressed he had the courage to do what was right for the patient, despite pressure from the opposing forces. This nurse deserves much praise and recognition for using proficient nursing assessment skills and handling the situation with/ the utmost professionalism. We are so blessed to have them on our team!
