I still feel blessed that Bridget refused to give up that night and found that one person in the hospital who could help. That event, in and of itself, shows the compassion, care, and concern that make her an outstanding nurse.
During my post-surgery stay Bridget showed such empathy and concern for me that knowing she was there overnight gave me great peace of mind. She always stressed that I was never to hesitate to hit the call button should I need anything, and when I did call, she responded quickly, asking what she could do for me. When her time allowed, Bridget would take time to have conversations with me, even if they had nothing to do with why I was there. Those minutes of lighthearted conversation can lift one’s spirits and lessen the stress of being hospitalized. Her nursing skills are evident as she handles issues without hesitation. For example, my IV began leaking so she attempted to place a new line in my left arm but wasn’t successful. So she found another nurse who said she would try, but again, several attempts without any luck. Bridget decided she needed to find an ultrasound-certified person because that was the only way a new IV could be placed. She searched the entire on duty staff and she found another nurse who came in, within the hour, and he was able to locate a vein with the ultrasound and get the new IV in place. He explained to me that a new IV would never have been able to be placed without the ultrasound because I was dehydrated, so my veins had flattened out; there was no “bounce” in them. I still feel blessed that Bridget refused to give up that night and found that one person in the hospital who could help. That event, in and of itself, shows the compassion, care, and concern that make her an outstanding nurse. Bridget left such an impression on me that even if I never see her again, I will always remember her. I am forever grateful.
