At the beginning of the COVID pandemic, Britney was one of the first nurses on our unit to have an assignment with more than one positive COVID patient. She received that assignment like she did any other in the past prior to the pandemic-positive and "ready-to-go" and get the day started. She donned and doffed all day, clustering care, and prioritizing her assignment like she would any other day. If she was feeling scared or apprehensive, she did not outwardly show it. Never once did we hear her complain that she was hot, couldn't breathe through the mask, or was feeling overwhelmed.
As the COVID pandemic continued on over the months, she continued to provide excellent patient care while jumping in to help her team any time an RRT was called or one of her "fruit buddies" was having a busy day. On one particular day, a patient who was withdrawing had become quite disruptive. Britney assisted her peer to calm the patient down, helping get the patient into bed and even provided a foot rub to help relax the patient. It worked!!
Yesterday, she was observed walking another confused and "difficult" patient in a wheelchair around the unit several times throughout the day while playing his favorite Frank Sinatra tunes on her own phone as they took a stroll. She would stop and provide an update to the home care team about another patient in her assignment and then continue on with her stroll. She is always on the pulse of every aspect of her assignment and what is happening on her unit.
In addition to all the above, she jumped in as a preceptor on the unit teaching and providing excellent experiences for our new RNs on the unit and serving as a positive role model.
We believe Britney is a DAISY Nurse not because of just the few examples listed above but because this is the nurse/person that she is every day. She makes a connection with her patients and peers every day with a positive attitude and truly cares for all around her.
