We were astonished that she had reached him in a most personal way, learning of his devotion to that team, and made it possible for him to relax and enjoy his frightening and painful overnight.
My 67-year-old brother, autistic with some dementia, was transported from his Memory Care Center to SPAH because of a C-Diff infection (secondary to ABX treatment for necrotizing pneumonia). He was very sick, confused, disoriented, and an unhappy man. The family spent the difficult days alongside him, but the nights were especially hard for him. When we arrived at 7am, we found that an overnight nurse named Brittany had done an exceptional, remarkable, and unbelievably compassionate thing for P. She somehow found a way to stream a Baltimore Orioles baseball game on the computer monitor next to his bed! How did she find the best way to comfort him during the rough overnight? We were astonished that she had reached him in a most personal way, learning of his devotion to that team, and made it possible for him to relax and enjoy his frightening and painful overnight. This is truly above and beyond what a nurse is called to do. This act of kindness brought tears to our eyes. Although P is unable to comprehend all that she accomplished, we will never forget what she did.
