What an Extraordinary Nurse Brittany is! Brittany is an Interventional Radiology Nurse who volunteered to help out the Breast Imaging department in critical staffing needs. She arrived to care for three scheduled procedures that were on the lighter side of difficulty. It wasn't until the second procedure that Brittany's nursing skills and critical thinking were put to the test. Unfamiliar with the procedure being performed, she jumped two feet in, knowing this had to be done in order for the patient to proceed to the OR for a much bigger surgery following our appointment. Having had a breast biopsy 3 weeks prior without complications, we expected this patient to tolerate an abbreviated similar procedure well, but that just wasn't the case. During the procedure, Brittany responded and cared for the patient with great compassion as an hour-long procedure turned into a two-hour procedure. The patient had become lightheaded multiple times and passed out while in compression of the mammogram unit with procedural devices being used. Her blood pressure had dropped significantly since she was brought over to breast imaging. Brittany, being used to treating these responses in IR with fluids and having her patients already lying down, had to act quickly and with safety in mind as the patient still had sharp devices in her skin. With the team, she was able to get the patient to a lying position, apply a cold compress, and monitor her vital signs. As the patient started to feel better with each lightheaded episode, she had multiple bathroom emergencies. Brittany and the team, concerned for the patient's safety, rolled the patient to and from the procedural room and then to the bathroom on the procedure chair and stayed with her. Unknown to Brittany and the mammography team, the patient was a research participant who was given a new study drug but was not advised to monitor and watch for any side effects. Despite the unknown, Brittany handled the patient with phenomenal critical thinking skills and response!
