Early on the morning of April 7th, 2017, we lost our first child to miscarriage. We had thought we could handle it at home, but the physical aspects of the miscarriage were too much. The love of my life was losing a lot of blood and fast. Upon her passing out and scaring the hell out of me, we knew we needed help. I drove her to Essentia Emergency Room. The staff at Essentia did not let us down. In fact, they anticipated our needs well before we knew we needed anything. Although every staff member who worked with us that morning was truly exceptional, and I mean everyone, our nurse, Brittney, made a lasting impression. From the first introduction, we could feel Brittney's compassion. She was caring and understanding. You might describe it as being at the top of her game. She balanced efficiency and kindness with grace. She caught details, like the fact that my sweetheart's pants were soaked with blood, and immediately sought out dry replacements. Throughout all of the not so private procedures, she was there with soothing kind words and a gentle touch. She advocated for us and ensured that anyone new to our case was first introduced and then prepped on our status. All of these actions were incredibly reassuring and allowed us to take a few deep breaths and grieve. Although Brittney's shift came to an end before our time with Essentia, she stopped by for one last check in. Nothing prepares you for the loss of a child, but it's true when they say that the kindness of one can ease the pain. Thank you, Brittney. You are truly an extraordinary nurse and human being.
