My 15 year old daughter was in the midst of a mental health crisis and made an attempt at her life. Terrified, I rushed her to Beverly hospital. Immediately, all of the staff assisted my daughter to ensure she would remain physically healthy. While waiting on these results, Brooke Anderson came and introduced herself to my daughter. My daughter was terrified, as we were in the center of the hallway near the nurses station on a very busy night in the ER. When Brooke talked to her it was like everything else around us disappeared. She asked about her interests, clubs she is part of in school, and compared the drama club plays that my daughter is putting on now to the ones that Brooke was part of back when she was in high school. Brooke was successful in relating to my daughter on a deep level, and made her forget that less than an hour ago she was at her lowest low of her life. Brooke then asked her what she wanted to do for a career, and was pleased to find out that my daughter wants to pursue a career in psychology. One sentence she has repeated to me a few times, and I think it changed her life. Brooke stated something along the lines of ‘you can do that. You can have a career in psych! If nothing else, to keep yourself alive, use this! You would be so good at it.’ My daughter is currently at an in-patient program getting the help she desperately needs. I visit her daily, and during our chats she ‘rates’ all of the doctors and nurses on her newly made up ‘Brooke-Scale’ with Brooke being what exemplifies being the 10/10 A+ part of the scale. Thankfully most of the people on her care team are ‘almost-Brooke-like’ Thank you, Brooke, from the bottom of my heart. You saved my girl.
