Caitlin is not only gentle and compassionate, but she is also competent and pays attention to details.
My 3-month-old daughter was incredibly sick with RSV. She was severely dehydrated, so the day shift nurses had a difficult time getting an IV started. The IV was only in for about 10 minutes when it started leaking all over us. I was in tears thinking about the baby getting a 6th poke because I assumed the IV would need to come out.
Caitlin was so kind and compassionate when she first arrived and met us. She was gentle in her demeanor and multi-tasked by calming the baby while carefully unwrapping baby's little foot. Instead of just pulling it out and starting over somewhere else, she inspected it closely and noticed it still had blood return but was bent inside her foot. She worked on it, explaining to me what she was doing the whole time, and she was able to get the IV running again. She helped secure it and positioned the baby's foot so that the fluids would flow better.
Caitlin is not only gentle and compassionate, but she is also competent and pays attention to details. When we got back to our room, the IV machine readings had been reset, but she remembered what number the IV was reading when I first pressed the call light for help, so we were able to give baby the amount of fluid Dr had recommended.
During our 4-night stay, I looked forward to having Caitlin as our night nurse. I could tell she genuinely cared about my baby. She offered clean sheets, a bath, new socks, offered to hold baby if I needed a break etc. She treated us like family. She would come in immediately when baby's O2 sat would drop, offering suction, watch her breathe and would bump up her oxygen if needed. I never had to wait and wonder if I should call for a nurse because Caitlin was always aware of what was happening with her.
She was empathetic, listened, and never made me feel like my worries were unwarranted. I think her experience working in the ICU helps her convey a sense of urgency, which makes patient's feel like they are her priority. Having an infant this sick is something I wish we didn't have to experience, but I felt safe and well cared for when Caitlin was our nurse. Sacred Heart Hospital is lucky to have her.
