A Veteran was brought to the VA ED by his wife, who stated he was becoming more aggressive and she was scared to be at home alone with him. Based on his behavior and inability to be redirected or consoled, he was placed on Constant Observation with a Focused Caregiver.

Over the next 2 days, his outbursts continued, making it difficult for the nursing staff to provide care. On Saturday morning, the Veteran became increasingly agitated and combative. In addition to VA Police, the Nurse on Duty arrived quickly to the Veteran's room on 6C.

NOD James spoke to the Veteran in a calming manner and was able to de-escalate the situation, allowing nursing staff to provide care and medications. 6C RN Thompson stated, “NOD James has a way with the veterans that is untouchable and his personality lights up rooms of even the most difficult veterans."
