Yesterday, STAT Team received a call about a patient who was post brain surgery. The patient was having some mild symptoms like oozing clear liquids from his surgical site and becoming extremely nauseous, but his vital signs were stable, and his neurological status hadn't changed.

Regardless, Carissa sensed something was off. She called the STAT team and had the residents re-consult neurosurgery. The patient went to CT and ended up requiring emergent surgery and ICU care. If Carissa hadn't called, the patient could have declined significantly before any of the issues were noticed. The most impressive part is that the patient wasn't ever assigned to Carissa. She had cared for him previously and noted his need for help while covering another RN for lunch. Carissa's quick action and careful nursing care helped ensure this patient received life-saving care without delay.
