Carl did my mom's start of care the evening she was discharged from the hospital. He was so gentle, kind, considerate, and understanding. He was soft spoken and listened to any questions and concerns my parents had. When he arrived, he introduced himself and shook my father's hand. He asked my mother if he could hug her. He had the utmost patience when explaining how to operate the pump and infuse the TPN. He made sure to stop frequently and ask if there were any questions or if he needed to re-explain anything. When he left he again shook my father's hand and hugged my mother.
After he left that night, I remember my mom telling me "I really, really like him. You can sure tell he loves what he does and if I could grade him it would be an A+!" Every visit he made to my mom, she felt was special.
I haven't had the pleasure of seeing Carl work with anyone else in the field but have heard him interact with patients over the phone. I remember one family in particular. Their father was in frail health and in the process of passing away. There were 2 adult boys that lived with them with disabilities. He was so sweet and so kind in his conversations with them. He took all the time needed to explain things in ways they could understand. The family was forever grateful to him for his kindness.
Carl is the true definition of what a nurse should be. He always put the patients first and he always makes them feel like he is taking care of only them.
***
I have worked with Carl for several years and I feel he is a fantastic example of what the DAISY Award represents. He looks at each individual as an opportunity to make a difference in their life. Carl does not discriminate against anyone based on the appearance of the person or their economic status. I feel that Carl shows compassion and empathy to each patient he comes in contact with.
Carl and I recently overlapped our visits at a patient's home and once again I was taken back by the way he interacted with not only this sweet little lady but her son as well. Carl went above and beyond to give each of them his time and attention. He answered their questions and provided the information they needed to understand the situation. Carl met the patient at her level and spoke to her as if he were speaking to his own family member. He included the patient, her son, and myself in the patients care.
Carl is a joy to work with and brings happiness and humor to those around him. He is humble and kind. He works as a team player and goes out of his way to help his co-workers. Carl has a positive attitude and is willing to adapt to any situation to better our department. Carl has many patients who request his services when re-admitted to our home care. He listens to other staff members and takes their ideas, thoughts, and feeling into consideration when makes decisions. He is not easily offended and makes the best of every situation he finds himself in.
