It was such a stressful day but because of Carla’s assistance and support, she helped relieve and eased the stress of my day.
One day, my patient became acutely confused during bedside hemodialysis and the dialysis nurse had to stop dialysis immediately. The patient needed staff to stay with her since then. It was a very stressful situation. The assigned PCT and I had to alternate sitting with her because we had other patients to take care of as well. That’s when Carla stepped in. She helped ease the situation. She’s always available to help her staff. She even provided 1:1 care with the patients so the PCT and I could take care of our other patient’s needs. Carla has a calming effect with elderly confused patients. Carla explained to the patient that tests needed to be done to find out what caused her confusion. The patient developed trust in her during their conversation. Labs were drawn and Carla held her hands. CT scan of the head was ordered STAT; the patient stated she will only go “if Carla takes her or goes with her”. Transport was really backed up that day and CT was ready for the patient. Carla took the patient down to CT herself by wheelchair. After the CT was done, Carla took the patient to the main lobby so the patient could look outside and experience a different environment from just being in her room for 7 days. The patient was very appreciative of what Carla did. When they came back to the room, the patient was calm. Carla stayed late in the afternoon (beyond her office hours) just to help take care of the patient and make sure everything was going to be okay. It was such a stressful day but because of Carla’s assistance and support, she helped relieve and eased the stress of my day. It just shows how much she cared for her patients and staff. Carla is always visible and available to assist her staff. She’s always making rounds in the unit, interacting with her staff and asking her staff what kind of assistance is needed. She makes sure we have everything we need to get our work done. She tries her best to ensure we have adequate staff to provide quality patient care. Carla is a “hands on” manager. I nominated Carla Campbell for The DAISY Nurse Leader Award for going above and beyond her managerial role and for continuing to practice her bedside nursing skills. Thank you for being such a supportive and compassionate nurse manager.
