Carlos Delgado, RN came down to the Intensive Care Unit when we were withdrawing life support on a 36 year old patient who had been on the 5th floor for awhile. Carlos made certain that this patient with no family knew that he was not alone and that he had him as a friend and that he was loved. Carlos told stories about their many conversations and celebrated the patient's life. Carlos helped to ease the patient's fear and made the experience more meaningful and easier to bear for all of us. Carlos is the essence of nursing.
