Carol is humble, compassionate, and generous to a fault. She is not only an incredible leader, but also a friend and mentor.
Carol is such an amazing person and director. She brings a smile to every unit she runs on a daily basis. She is always ready to listen and help out in any way possible. Carol has a demeanor about her that brings happiness to anyone she meets. She is always ready and willing to jump in and give us a hand when the situation arises. We are very lucky and grateful to have her as our director. In addition to making the staff happy, she always goes up to the patients and families and brings a smile to their faces as well.

It is a privilege and honor to nominate our director, Carol Burroughs, for the DAISY NURSE LEADER AWARD. Carol is the epitome of leadership. She is a role model for all her units and team members. She goes over and beyond for her team, pts, families, surgeons, anesthesiologists, and customers. She is often found in the OR turning rooms over, transporting pts to the rooms, circulating RN in the rooms, and even in the PACU recovering pts. She has volunteered to work the weekends when we are short-staffed. She is highly engaged in patient satisfaction, employee satisfaction, SSI, and pt. safety and Quality. Her leadership and mentoring of our leadership team are above all. She implemented a leadership book club for her team, and we are proudly on our 3rd book. This book club has substantially enhanced our leadership thinking, skills, growth as a leader, and leadership development. Carol is an extremely positive and energetic leader. She is highly motivated and always creates ways to motivate her teams. She is always found in any one of her multiple depts. with a smile on her face and a joyous word of advice or encouragement. I can't tell you how many times she has spent her own money for gifts for our team, lunches, breakfast, cakes, and ' just because' celebrations and appreciation for her team. She is the first one to volunteer to work the popcorn booth, snow cone machine, lucky charms booth, or any event that WCH/Baptist is participating in. I can't go without saying her laugh is contagious and uplifting to everyone that meets her. She loves what she does, and she loves her team. We are all so grateful to have such a kind, compassionate, caring, respectful, and amazing leader. Carol is everything that Baptist and WCH stand for in our mission statement. I can't think of anyone more deserving of this honor than our director Carol Burroughs.

Carol came to us at Wolfson's Peds OR at the beginning of Covid, and at an unsure time both in the workplace and in the world, she gave us her support and kindness as well as the leadership we needed. She still does this throughout all the departments she oversees, every single day, with a smile on her face. Without her guidance and determination to improve the place we come to every day, in which most of us spend more time than at home, it would feel a lot emptier, and we would lose a lot of great help.

Carol Burroughs is truly deserving of The DAISY Nurse Leader Award. The criteria listed for nomination describe her, almost to a T. Since joining our team in 2020, her presence and visibility have made a huge impact on our team’s morale and the dynamics in the OR have changed for the better. In a world full of no’s, she is always looking for a way to get to yes. She makes herself available every day and is willing to help in any capacity needed. During COVID she sought out EVS leadership to learn how to terminally clean rooms so there would be less turnover time between cases. Carol has scrubbed cases when staffing was short. In addition to working her normal work week, she has come in to fill staffing shortages on the weekends, saying she can’t ask her staff to work extra if she isn’t willing to as well. Last winter when staffing throughout the hospital was impossible, she advocated for her team to receive critical staffing bonuses for their help in covering numerous open shifts. She is often seen talking and joking with kids on the way to the OR, helping to alleviate separation anxiety and apprehension. She will then stay in the operating suite with the patient until induction is complete, always putting the patients first. Carol is humble, compassionate, and generous to a fault. She is not only an incredible leader, but also a friend and mentor. I hope that I was able to give you a glimpse of how supportive, dedicated, kindhearted, and incredible she is, and hope you’ll look favorably upon this nomination because it is TRULY deserved.

Throughout my career at Wolfson, I have worked with many directors and leaders, and I have to say that Carol Burroughs embodies the qualities and characteristics of a transformational leader. She takes time each day to round on her departments and build relationships with all staff members. She strives for excellence and engages team members to share ideas and solutions while focusing on performance improvement. Carol leads by example and most days balances her busy calendar in green OR scrubs so that she can be available to help with patient care or lend a hand to anyone who asks. She has an open-door policy and welcomes conversations. When talking with Carol about work or personal matters, her care and compassion for each individual are obvious as she makes sure to follow up and check on them. She gives to her teams selflessly all while finding ways to make us feel valued and appreciated whether by buying lunch or taking the time to fill out individual candy grams for everyone. For these reasons and many more, I believe Carol is deserving of being recognized as a Wolfson Children’s DAISY Nurse Leader.

She provides the example to jump in and do whatever it takes to get the job done. She listens to others and advocates to make changes or improvements as needed. She is dedicated to growing the skills and knowledge base of her team and improving communication to achieve optimal patient care. She is a highly engaged leader who takes the time to round on all her staff and get to know their thoughts, ideas, and concerns. She frequently engages with patients and their parents/guardians to ensure they are receiving safe, quality care. She makes herself available at any time for staff regardless of their job title and is considered 'highly visible' to the team. She takes the time to show support at times when staff are experiencing personal life events. She is an amazing leader and very deserving of this Distinguished award.

Carol Burroughs is the epitome of a team leader that you can trust, respect, and depend on. Carol is not afraid to jump in and help with ANY task- be it transporting patients, cleaning rooms, mopping floors, replacing sharp containers, or answering the never-ending phone calls. She always does so with a smile on her face and a positive attitude. She takes the time to get to know her team and schedules meet and greets with all new staff members. Her welcoming smile and contagious laugh make starting a new position less daunting, and she makes it known from day one that she is an available resource. Carol works diligently to improve employee engagement by listening to her team. She offers thoughtful guidance and advice which in turn make staff more comfortable sharing their safety (or other) concerns. She includes her team in decision-making processes because she values their expertise and input. She takes time to thank those that do their job well and is grateful for any help she receives. She is such a hardworking and positive person, that one can’t help but aspire to be more like her. She handles stressful situations in a calm and focused manner and encourages her team to think critically while quickly solving problems. She has truly changed the environment in the OR for the better and she genuinely deserves this award.
Congratulations Carol, you are an inspiration! Thank you for all you do for our patients, families, and team members!
