Many patients admitted to the hospital have no extended family members and quite often leave their personal belonging at home and are unable to get them during their hospitalization. Carol Daley noticed that multiple patients were unable to read or watch television because they leave their glasses at home.

Carol saw the need to provide reading glasses to such patients. As a result of her assessment, she went out and purchased several pairs of reading glasses so she could give a pair to a patient who was in need.

I can recall a deaf and mute patient who was admitted to our unit. The patient appeared to be very angry with the staff. Carol had the opportunity of caring for this patient. She spent a lot of time with the patient and ensured that she called the interpreter service and obtained a sign language interpreter to be with the patient on a daily basis to maintain optimum communication.

During her assessment one morning, the patient voiced via the interpreter that he could not watch television because he had forgotten his eye glasses at home. Carol went out and bought him a pair of reading glasses. His whole attitude changed, his anger was gone. He was very grateful and he expressed his gratitude to Carol for her kind act.

As a nurse, I saw how beneficial it was for our patients to have reading glasses to help them see better so as a result, I have joined forces with Carol and have financially supported this worthy cause.

I believe Carol has gone above and beyond the call of a nurse when she single-handedly initiated this awesome act of kindness. She is a caring and an excellent nurse.
