It was another busy day and I was helping a co-worker out.I entered a room with a young woman and her husband.It was while I was in this room that I was struck by the beauty of Catherine Drummond's nursing care.I watched her in the room with this family actively listening and supporting them.After she left the room, I was stopped by the patient and her husband because they wanted to share just how much they had been touched by Catherine's caring and compassion.With tears in the patient's husband's eyes he explained to me the difficult week that they had, hearing news that was very difficult and unexpected.He was taken aback by the calm presence that Catherine exuded. Each and every time that she entered into their room, it felt like his wife was the only patient that Catherine was caring for.He continued to explain that she was attentive to his wife's every need and that they felt safe in her care.
He said that his wife never had to wait for anything that she needed and that when the pain medications were not working, he witnessed her collaborating with the doctors to get something that would work better.All while she was doing this, she remained calm which of course calmed them.As he was telling me this, he started to cry stating that, "I felt that the way that Catherine listened to my wife showed that she truly cared for her.I could tell that she cared as much for her as I do, and it gave me peace of mind that I could leave to make sure things were done at home. I knew she would be in great hands."He continued to say that she made everyone in the room feel at ease and they didn't feel rushed.At this point the patient spoke up and expressed that she felt that Catherine truly listened to her, waiting for her to say everything that she needed to.She felt that Catherine was very supportive when they needed it most.
The greatest part is that this is not a one-time situation; Catherine gives this attention to every patient that is in her care.She made a huge difference for this family that was going through a difficult time.
