I would like to recognize Cathy Litscher, RN, for her recent actions. On this evening, I had abdominal pains that had become more intense and increasingly painful, where a stronger pain medication was not effective. She recognized the symptoms were indicative of the spleen that was part of my ER history. Cathy was able to steer my care in the appropriate direction. This started a process throughout the evening that led to a diagnosis of internal bleeding of the spleen. I was thrashing in unimaginable pain. Cathy was the ringleader in managing my care. She stayed with me at every step – CT scan and other tests. I said, “I need Cathy,” and she gave me reassurance in her eyes that I needed it. She kept me posted all the way through. She let me know what the plans were throughout the process and did not leave my side until transferred into trauma care. Then, I had an emergent interventional radiology procedure to manage the bleeding. Upon my return to Rehab, she continued my nursing care and was a cheerleader for each accomplishment, big or small. Her balance of doing her job exceptionally and compassionately. At all times, she was in command of the situation while putting me at ease, even through the unimaginable pain. She went above and beyond to help me. She got me through one of the worst experiences in my life.
